At the end of November, a praying mantis started hanging out on our screen outside our kitchen window

It's very unusual to see praying mantises.

After it had hung out for more than a week, we noticed that it had done something: it had laid a nest of eggs. We learned that this meant that the mother praying mantis had died but her leg was still attached to the nest for protection and protein. She had become part of the nest itself. We will continue to watch it over the winter. The babies are due out in the spring...
